What to Check Before Buying Property in Nigeria

Buying property is a documentation exercise as much as a property search. Before any money changes hands, confirm who owns the land, what the survey shows and whether the title is registered.

Begin with the survey plan. A registered survey should carry a number that can be checked with the relevant state authority. Where a survey has not been registered, treat that as a question to resolve rather than a detail to overlook.

Visit the site more than once and at different times of day. Access, drainage and neighbouring activity are far easier to judge in person than from photographs.

Finally, instruct an independent solicitor. Their fee is small relative to the purchase, and their role is to act for you alone.
